4 Spectrophotometer Tips in Line with Sustainability

Product Update

4 Spectrophotometer Tips in Line with Sustainability

Wolflabs is committed to halve carbon emissions by 2030, and as many other companies look at ways they can be more sustainable, we have four tips on how to run your spectrophotometer more sustainably.

1.    Ensure air cooling fans and photo optics are free of dust by keeping away from air / ventilation ducts.
2.    Periodically remove from the bench and clean underneath the machine in order to remove any dust that could be sucked into the unit.
3.    Prevent photo optics over heating by making sure the cooling vents are not obstructed.
4.    Certain readers are programmed to be energised whilst the unit is powered on – save costs by ensuring the unit is never left on longer than the manufacturer recommends.

Spectrophotometers - Jenway

?67 Series Spectrophotometers

• Colour touch screen display
• High quality, sealed split beam optics for optimum photometric performance
• Secure multi-user operation
• Save to SD memory cards
• Enhanced productivity
• Extensive range of accessories for flexibility and improve productivity

There are three models in the 67 series - Model 6700 covers the visible range of the spectrum and has a 4nm bandwidth; Models 6705 and 6715 cover the UV/visible range of the spectrum and have a 4nm and 1.5nm bandwidth respectively. All three instruments have modes for photometrics, spectrum scanning, multi-wavelength analysis, kinetics and quantitation, giving direct concentration results against single or multi-point calibrations. With extensive post measurement tools to ensure results are presented exactly to each users requirements the 67 series spectrophotometers also offer significant advances in data portability.

Together, the touch screen and colour display give the fastest, most flexible instrument interface possible. Where fine cursor control is required, using the QWheel™ makes the task easy and precise.

Jenway have developed Secure Multi User Operation for when instruments are shared by a number of users, so access to the instrument functions is controlled through a secure log-in procedure. For maximum security PIN codes can be allocated to individuals, groups or departments and to further increase flexibility each method can be given three levels of security:

• Public access is free to all users.
• Read only methods can be accessed by all users, but only modified by the originator.
• Personal method can only be accessed by the logged in user

The high capacity internal memory of the 67 series enables over 500 methods and results to be stored. Removable SD cards further increases the flexibility and data transfer and enables the direct transfer of results to a PC via a USB port. Here all data can be viewed, exported, saved or printed for generating reports and standard operating procedures. Copying the SD card to the instrument's internal memory enables the easy cloning of multiple instruments, ensuring common laboratory practice and speeding set-up in busy teaching establishments.

The 6500 series are multi-capability scanning spectrophotometers designed to provide the user with a high quality system which offers all the features required by a scientist to manipulate and process spectral information.
The Model 6500 Visible range unit operates at 320-1100nm.
The Model 6505 UV/Visible range unit operates at 190-1100nm.

Features include:
A customised LCD
gives a clear readout of calibration data, sample data and all set-up options.

Simple keypad layout and operating protocols facilitates the setting of experimental parameters and initiating sample analysis procedures.

Graphical user interface (GUI) allows interactive control of all operating parameters. Both keypad and mouse operation are fully supported.

Multi-language capability allows screen instructions to be presented in a choice of English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.

Five operating ranges are available - photometrics, spectrum, kinetics, multi-wavelength and quantitation.
Full kinetics capability allows, usually in conjunction with the peltier cell block, full analysis of timed reactions

Calibration curves producing non-linear results can also be accommodated using in-built software. Up to twenty data points (standards), or up to seven when using the multi-cell changer, can be determined automatically and used to construct a calibration curve. A variety of statistical methods are available to ensure a close correlation to all curve shapes.

Full scanning capability allows scan range, speed and resolution to be user adjusted and the resultant scan to be auto scaled for enhanced visibility. Peaks and valleys are labelled with wavelength and absorbance values and can be readily down loaded to the optional internal printer, to a PC or a Centronics printer. A cursor facility allows the user to interrogate specific parts of the scanned data

An integral printer module is available and can be supplied as a factory fitted item at the time of ordering the product or as a customer installable module.

Full interfacing capability using RS232 interfacing or an analogue output is provided as standard. Utilising the RS232 facility allows results to be down loaded via the front panel print key.
Both models incorporate a bi-directional interface allowing remote operation, calibration and interrogation by an external computer.

An automatic results log allows readings to be stored in a data file either when the print key is pressed; at a user defined set time interval or by a multiple sample assay using the 8 position cell holder. Data files have a user entered ID and can be saved in internal memory or to an external data card. Results saved in internal memory can be transferred to an external data card.

Method storage allows all user set parameters to be saved against a user identification. A method can be subsequently recalled which configures the instrument to the saved parameters. The instrument settings for a recalled method can be altered and subsequently saved against the same or a different method identification. Methods can be saved in internal memory or to an external memory card. Methods saved in internal memory can be transferred to an external data card. The instruments memory has the capacity to store a minimum of fifty methods.

Traceable calibration standards provide the on-going assurance of accuracy required by Good Laboratory Practice (G.L.P.). A user set identification number (up to 20 digits in length) is entered and will be shown on any printouts produced by the instrument. In addition, each printout will show sample number, reading, unit of measurement, the wavelength analysis and the current time and date. Scans and concentration curves stored will also be time and date stamped. The 6500 series complies fully with EEC and US directives relating to ESD/EMC emission and susceptibility

Genova Life Science Analyser - DNA

Immediate answers to DNA purity

Pre-programmed for user selectable absorbance ratios

Direct readout of dsDNA, ssDNA, RNA and Oligo purity

Purity scan mode

The Genova is designed for the scientist whose primary interest is the study of DNA and proteins. Operation is simple and quick, with all routinely used DNA calculations being pre-programmed into the product. The Genova employs a precision built diffraction grating to select wavelengths and narrow bandwidth, thus avoiding the limited capability of filter based units. Three independent wavelength calibrations are performed during the start-up protocol to guarantee optimum confidence in results and to satisfy G.L.P. procedures.

Optimised for low volume analysis the determination of DNA levels as low as 70ng with sample volumes as low as 20µl is possible using the capillary sampling accessory. The Genova will automatically calculate ratios at 260/280 or 260/230 with an optional subtraction of a third wavelength (typically 320nm). Alternatively, pre-programmed factors allow direct readings of ssDNA, dsDNA, RNA and Oligonucleotides.

Standard pre-programmed parameters for B.C.A, Bradford, Biuret, Lowry and direct measurement

Storage of calibration curves

Versatile open architecture that allows other wavelengths and accessories for other assays to be performed

The on-board software allows all protein methodologies to be optimised and run on the Genova with a minimum of set-up time. These methodologies can then be viewed on the display for easy interpretation of linearity of response. The Genova has the versatility to change these parameters easily for the scientist who wants to optimise their analysis with different wavelength, curve or constant.

Jenway Fluorimeter Filters

There are 3 types of filter for the Jenway fluorimeters.

The bandpass filters are ideal as excitation filters as they allow only the light between the specified wavelengths through to the sample. For example, UG1 allows all the light between 320 and 380nm through and excludes the light below 320nm and above 380nm.

The cut-off and interference filters are normally used as the emission filters where a much narrower range of wavelengths is required. The cut-off filters block all light below the specified wavelength and the interference filters allow the specified wavelength and light ±5nm of this through to the sample.

Fluorometers - Jenway

62 Series Fluorometers

• High quality optics: pulsed xenon lamp and Total Energy Transfer (TET)
• Intelligent Filter Modules ensure correct filters are fitted for selected method
• Intuitive programming allows fast program creation
• Raw fluorescence or concentration values options
• Standard curve and kinetic functions
• Heated sample holder and sipper pump accessories
• Compatible with DataWay PC software

Jenway offers three Fluorometer models to cover a wide range of applications. The 6280 model is ideal for the most sensitive determinations with emission wavelengths up to 650nm. When higher emission wavelengths are required the 6285 with its red-enhanced detector is the unit of choice. For less sensitive applications and a broader wavelength range up to 1100nm the low cost 6270 unit is more
suitable.

With press-to-read operation and Total Energy Transfer (TET) technology the output of the high-energy xenon lamp is maximised and its expected life extended so that it should never need replacing within the normal lifetime of the unit. The high quality optics are complemented by the Intelligent Filter Modules (IFM) that are identified by the unit, generating error messages should the wrong filters be fitted or their positions be incorrect.

Each model offers intuitive operation with a user interface based on logical menus that can be navigated from the simple keypad. Up to 20 methods can be created without restriction and saved for future use. They can also be locked against accidental change by password entry. The permanent time and date tag on every stored reading supports Good Laboratory Practice, while calibration reminders and operator identity can also be entered to support conformance and traceability of results.

All models are powered from an external, universal mains adapter suitable for use from 90V to 230V, while the 12V DC input enables use in vehicles or from suitable battery packs.
