4 Data Logger monitoring systems Tips in Line with Sustainability

4 Data Logger monitoring systems Tips in Line with Sustainability

1. Regularly check any wires and cables to ensure there is no damage, and that nothing has accidentally been unplugged, as these could cause incorrect readings.
2. Calibrate your device at least once a year to ensure the probe and monitor is working to full capacity. Equipment not running at its full potential has the effect of using more energy and costing more to run for the end user.
3. Most monitoring systems run on batteries, and it is important that when it is time to replace them, they are disposed of sustainably. You can return lead-acid batteries to a battery retailer or local household hazardous waste collection program; do not put lead-acid batteries in the trash or municipal recycling bins.
4. To get the best results from your monitors ensure you place it in the ideal location. For example, if monitoring room air quality the monitor should be placed in the breathing zone, a height range between 3 and 6 ft (0.9 and 1.8 m) above the floor. Placement in this zone will ensure that the device collects samples from air that building occupants are breathing.

4 Ovens Tips in Line with Sustainability

1. Check door seals to ensure less heat escapes.
2. Regular service to ensure the heating element is working to full capacity. Equipment not running at its full potential has the effect of using more energy and costing more to run for the end user.
3. Choosing insulated chambers, and doors with double glazing save energy costs by over half.
4. Many ovens now have the option to use a mobile app, which allows you to check the status of the dry chamber in real time. This will enable you to remotely monitor your run without any unnecessary door openings, which could lose heat and create unwanted heat and energy waste.

5 Incubators Tips in Line with Sustainability

5 Incubators Tips in Line with Sustainability

1. Check for wear and tear on door seals at least once a year. If the door is not sealing properly across the whole surface, your energy costs will be needlessly high.
2. Ensuring that regular maintenance work is performed at least once a year keeps your incubator working to the best of its ability and picks up any hidden faults or wear and tear issues that may be hampering performance.
3. With an increased amount of dust in the ambient air, clean the Peltier fan grid by suction or blowing several times a year. This will keep the equipment clean, and ensures it is functioning efficiently.
4. If users can agree a basic procedure for door openings this can often result in fewer door openings over the day. Even simply discussing the issue raises awareness that unnecessary door openings and leaving doors open for too long will increase energy costs.
5. Choosing cabinets with automatic lighting and timers can not only be better for timed experiments but will also save more energy. Once the desired light dosage is achieved, the chamber switches off automatically.

5 Freezers Tips in Line with Sustainability

5 Freezers Tips in Line with Sustainability

1. Check for ice build-up around the door, this can sometimes mean that your door seal is not fully closed and causes reduced heat insulation efficiency and obstruct door movements.
2. Defrosting your freezers on an annual basis will allow for the removal of built-up ice, and gives you the opportunity to give the interior compartment a clean.
3. Place your freezer away from heat sources such as the ovens or glasswashers or any other equipment that may radiate heat. Heat sources make these appliances work harder to keep their interior cool. To that end keeping your refrigerator / freezer in a well ventilated and controlled ambient will further reduce running times and energy consumption.
4. Set the thermostat in your freezer to the optimum energy-efficient temperature. Every degree lower requires five percent more energy. 5. Once the freezer is down to temperature most energy is consumed through temperature recovery after prolonged door openings. For this reason, being able to retrieve samples quickly is a major benefit. It therefore may be worth purchasing an inventory system. Depending on the usage it is likely the cost of the inventory system will be compensated for by the reduction in energy consumption, over the lifetime of the freezer.

5 Fridges Tips in Line with Sustainability

1. Check for wear and tear on door seals at least once a year. If the door is not sealing properly across the whole surface, your energy costs will be needlessly high.
2. Place your fridge away from heat sources such as ovens, glasswashers, out of direct sunlight, or away from other equipment that may radiate heat. Heat sources make these appliances work harder to keep their interior cool. To that end keeping your refrigerator / freezer in a well ventilated and controlled ambient will further reduce running times and energy consumption.
3. Clean your fridge’s condenser coils every 6 to 12 months. Use a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner attachment on the coils, which are either at the bottom or the back of the fridge. Equipment not running at its full potential has the effect of using more energy and costing more to run for the end user. TURN THE UNIT OFF AND use a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner attachment on the coils.
4. Proper maintenance will give a longer life to your refrigerator and will also save more energy. So, be sure to regularly clean and defrost your machine.
5. Set the fridge thermostat to between 3°C and 5°C. Every degree lower requires five percent more energy.

Should you take out a preventative maintenance contract on your ultra-low temperature freezers?

Should you take out a preventative maintenance contract on your ultra-low temperature freezers?

Ultralow temperature freezers are expensive pieces of equipment that require routine maintenance. They differ from most other types of equipment in that a break down could not only affect your current ability to operate but also compromise future research plans. The good news about ultralows is that they are now so reliable that all of the major manufacturers provide a five-year warranty as standard. The bad news is that this warranty does not cover the loss of any product. Routine maintenance is therefore essential. Should I take out a preventative maintenance contract or carry out routine maintenance myself?
Unless money is no issue, the answer to this question probably depends on the number of freezers in your lab. It’s probably possible to produce a mental algorithm that produces the answer from the following points.

Four CO2 incubator sustainability tips

Four CO2 incubator sustainability tips

Wolflabs is committed to halve carbon emissions by 2030, and as many other companies look at ways they can be more sustainable, we have tips on how to run your C02 incubator more sustainably.

1. Check for wear and tear on door seals at least once a year. If the door is not sealing properly across the whole surface, your energy and CO2 costs will be needlessly high.

2. Check that units are running at their set points using external CO2 and temperature monitoring devices. (These monitors are not expensive and as they are used infrequently, can be shared amongst groups of users.) You will often find that set points have drifted out of calibration and if they are running high, once again your energy and CO2 costs will be needlessly high.

3. Check the integrity of the tubing between your CO2 cylinder and the CO2 inlets of the units on a regular basis. Most likely your units have CO2 alarms that will tell you when there is a serious problem. However, if there are small leaks in the tubing the incubators will simply call for more gas to compensate for this in order to maintain the set point. CO2 incubators should actually use very little gas over a week. It’s often the case that most gas is being lost through leaks.

4. If users can agree a basic procedure for door openings this can often result in fewer door openings over the day. Even simply discussing the issue raises awareness that unnecessary door openings and leaving doors open for too long will increase energy and CO2 costs.

Energy saving tips for those using liquid nitrogen vessels

Energy saving tips for those using liquid nitrogen vessels.   Due to the construction of a aluminium vessel, it is an shell on the outside, a vacuum and an inner shell. The outer and inner shell are only connected around the lid of the vessel. If you have a unit on castors still try to move the unit as infrequently as possible. Any movement can put pressure on the connection between the outer and inner shells and over time compromise the vacuum resulting in a greater liquid nitrogen consumption. Keep a log of the nitrogen loss of each vessel you own. If nitrogen losses increase over time or vary between manufacturers, models or users contact your gas supplier or Wolflabs for input on ways that nitrogen loss might be reduced.

Wolflabs is committing to halving carbon emissions by 2030

The UN target for the reduction of CO2 emissions is 43% by 2030. Having become carbon neutral in 2017 it is Wolflabs’ intention to reduce its carbon emissions by a further 50% over the next eight years and to expand sales in such a way as to help customers and suppliers reduce emissions at the same time. This involves the following initiatives:   A 6.25% reduction year-on-year on activities that create emissions. (Energy consumption, travel etc.) Working with our suppliers to identify those with similar initiatives and whose products have better energy usage figures so that we can preferentially promote these companies. Offering trade-in deals to customers so as to enable manufacturers to recondition and resell existing product as an alternative to manufacturing from scratch. Offering our customers credits against future purchases for equipment they no longer require but that others could use.   If you would like more information on the above, please contact Samantha Hodsman?? Wolf Laboratories assists with an urgent appeal for surgical equipment for Ukraine

See - https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/surgicalequipmentkyiv?utm_term=vwp4PWv6N

Since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, in February 2022, people from around the world have come together in a common cause to help those in need through humanitarian appeals and donations. Wolf Laboratories were recently approached by one of our customers at the University of Cambridge, Ukrainian born scientist Anastasia Tsyben, to help in any way possible and we were happy to get involved.

Anastasia began a fund-raising campaign to raise £10,000, and together with her team at Cambridge, has been working directly with doctors in Kiev to use this money for sourcing paediatric equipment to be shipped out to the country.

Since the start of the campaign, Anastasia has had an overwhelming response and has seen an outpour of generosity via personal and company donations. The money raised so far has already begun to go towards emergency supplies, with the purchase of medical aid, medication, baby food and hygiene products amongst other items, which have been donated to the charity Ukraine Lifeline.

Due to the success of the appeal, the first twenty-two-ton truck arrived in Ukraine at the end of March. The truck also carried 39 out-of-hospital birth bags from Baby LifeLine. These bags are filled with equipment to allow the safest of baby deliveries in difficult environmental circumstances such as bomb shelters and metros. These birthing kits cost approximately £1000 each and will be a vital piece of equipment for the estimated 80,000 women who are expected to give birth over the next three months.

Wolf Laboratories’ initial donation of £1,250 was only the beginning of our mission to help towards Anastasia to reach her target. We are now actively donating the first £1000 of profit from the sale of our Covid-19 lateral flow testing kits, with the money going directly to Anastasia.

To purchase Covid-19 test kits from us to help with the appeal, click here

Over the next financial year Cancer Research UK is likely to see a drop in income of around 20-25% so we felt it was more important than ever to take part. Overall we manged to raise an amazing £315! Thank you to everyone involved in helping us reach this target. We look forward to raising even more for next year!

Macmillan Coffee Morning 2020

On Friday the 25th of September Wolflabs took part in the "World’s Biggest Coffee Morning" to help raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Due to current circumstances we couldn't hold out usual "Bake Off" competition so instead we gave everyone 10 minutes to stop work, relax and have a coffee and their favourite cake. Below are some of the delicious treats we enjoyed.

From the coffee morning we raised a total of £52.11 which will help towards specialist health care, information and financial support to people affected by cancer.

If you would like to find out more about Macmillan Cancer Support or make a donation you can visit their website here https://www.macmillan.org.uk/

Wolflabs accredited as a Living Wage Employer

As part of our ongoing commitment to a fair system for salary structure, Wolflabs is now accredited as a Living Wage Employer. The real Living Wage is the only rate calculated according to the costs of living. It provides a voluntary benchmark for employers that wish to ensure their staff earn a wage they can live on, not just the government minimum. The hourly rate of pay is set independently, updated annually and differs from the National Living Wage. Further information can be found on https://www.livingwage.org.uk/.

In addition to being accredited as a Living Wage Employer Wolflabs also has systems in place to ensure there is no gender pay gap and that no individual earns too great a multiple of the lowest salary.
